I just came across this article in the NYTimes. Both Lamictal and Depakote are mentioned, as well as Topamax, Keppra, Lyrica, and Neurontin. The FDA report cited found that anti-seizure meds are similar to SSRIs in that their use carries some risk of inducing suicidal thought. But these guys at least have the sense to stress that the risk far outweighs the risks of not treating epilepsy and bipolar disorder with effective medication. The report also seems to indicate that the risk for suicidal symptoms is higher for those taking the drugs for seizure disorders rather than bipolar disorder.Take a look: F.D.A. Finds Increase in Suicide Symptoms for Patients Using Seizure Medications
UPDATE (2/1/08): Ok, today’s version of the article says, “The FDA found drug-treated patients were at increased risk no matter their diagnosis, but that the risk was highest for epilepsy sufferers.”
